Windows 11 devices for schools
Launched in 2021, Windows 11 marks the first major release of the operating system since 2015. The redesign focuses on user experience and ease of use, alongside new productivity features and updates to security and accessibility.
Windows 10 support will officially end on 14th October 2025, after which Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support. Your computers running Windows 10 will still work - but Microsoft, and RM, recommend moving to Windows 11 to ensure your school IT systems remain efficient and secure.
Whilst most devices from the last few years will be able to simply upgrade to Windows 11, many older devices will be incompatible. Your decision whether to upgrade Windows whilst keeping your existing hardware or refresh devices with newer desktops and laptops may have other considerations. For example if your school has refreshed or is refreshing your network infrastructure to improve connectivity within the schools, older devices could become the point of bottleneck if their hardware can't utilise the same modern Wi-Fi standards.
Refreshing with new devices can bring many advantages:
- Improved power efficiency
- Benefit from lower electricity usage
- Helps you meet sustainability goals
- Longer battery life from mobile devices
- Improved classroom performance
- Fully meeting DfE standards
- Stable and reliable during teaching
- Modern functionality such as Wi-Fi 6
- Up-to-date safety and security features
- Lower total cost of ownership
- New machines last many years, unlike some refurbished tech
- Covered by warranties, with relative ease of replacing parts in the rare case of failure
- Reduced energy bills, when scaled over multiple devices

Can't we just extend support for Windows 10?
Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESU) is a short-term fix with long-term risks. Old devices cost more to run over time, also becoming ineligible for trade in. Major threats will be patched, but minor bugs stay exposed - and no new drivers may limit the accessories you can use.
Smarter ways to budget
Trade-in schemes could save you up to £150 per device. Further options are available if making a single outright purchase for the number of Windows 10 devices you need to replace is unfeasible. You could consider spreading the costs with a lease, or perhaps a 1:1 parental-contribution scheme.
